Befriending the Eldery in North Tyneside
Hand in Hand is a volunteer befriending scheme for elderly people living alone in the Wallsend area. It aims to encourage older people regain lost confidence, maintain independence and make new friends by:
- Offering friendship
- Calling in for tea and chat
- Providing company, visiting shops, the doctor or hospital
- Helping with form-filling, reading, writing letters, etc.
This free befriending service is run by local volunteers who are carefully chosen and carry an identity card. They receive training and on-going support. Volunteers do not take the place of Home Carers, but are there as a friend.
