General Prayers

Almighty God, please bless our nation with political leaders who are not only gifted, but who also aspire to high moral standards in both their private and political lives.
We thank you for the increasing number of Christian men and women in positions of influence today.
We pray for those entrusted with administering Justice in Magistrates’, County, Crown and High Courts, Tribunals in England and Wales and their equivalents in Scotland and Northern Ireland. We pray that they will strive for the highest standards of fairness and truth.
Lord we pray that in our secularised society, where the Bible is often ignored and regarded as irrelevant, that you will grant wisdom and courage to our Christian leaders that they be faithful, wise and understanding about how your unchanging Truth relates to today’s world.

Help me, Lord to remember that religion is not to be confined to church or closet, nor exercised only in prayer and meditation, but that everywhere I am in your presence. So my every word and action have a moral content.

Susanna Wesley (1669-1742)
Mother of John and Charles Wesley

Lord you have given so much to me,
Give one thing more – a grateful heart;
Not thankful when it pleases me,
As if your blessings had spare days;
But such a heart whose very pulse may be your praise.

George Herbert (1593-1633)

Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.

Grant us ears to hear,

Eyes to see

Wills to obey,

Hearts to love;

Then declare what you will,

Reveal what you will,

Command what you will,

Demand what you will.

>Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
